The Caregiver Conversation: What to Say
A simple script for asking someone to be your animal's caregiver.
The Caregiver Conversation
Many people put off this conversation because they do not know how to start. Here is a script.
The opening
"I am working on a plan to make sure [animal name] is always cared for, even if something happens to me. I would love it if you would be willing to be their primary caregiver in an emergency. I want to walk you through what that would actually mean before you decide."
What to cover
- The specific situations you are planning for (hospitalization, travel, evacuation, long-term)
- What resources exist (documented care instructions, vet contacts, supplies)
- What financial support is in place, if any
- That a written backup caregiver will also be named
- That they can say no, or change their mind later
After they agree
Give them a copy of your care documentation, your contact info, and your vet''s info. Update them after major life changes.
